TL;DR - Read a 2 minute summary of the event in this article here.

What is

A 48-hour design challenge where participants work alongside a community organization that has a challenge that could benefit from our help with a fresh approach. In a 48 hour time frame, teams collaborate with stakeholders of the community organization to propose solutions following the project prompt.
This year, the American Red Cross of the Western New York region partnered with us to ask:

How can the Red Cross attract a more diverse volunteer workforce to support the Disaster Action Team (DAT) and the Home Fire Campaign (HFC)?

I worked with designers Kennedy Intihar and Michelle Fu to:

  • Learn about the Red Cross in Rochester and the DAT/HFC,
  • Interview DAT members,
  • Understand demographic populations in Rochester, and
  • Determine the goal, research, and plan of action for our proposal.

Research

About The Programs

American Red Cross
Organization built to prevent & alleviate suffering through the mobilization of volunteers; a non-profit organization that supports humanitarian aid.
  • 90% of the Red Cross’s humanitarian work is done by volunteers.
  • Their main call of action in Western NY is house fires (almost 1 per day).
Disaster Action Team (DAT)
Local disaster responder team within the Red Cross, committed to provide 24-hour immediate support and assistance to individuals and families who have been impacted by a home fire or other local disaster.
Home Fire Campaign (HFC)
Team within the Red Cross who install smoke detectors in Rochester homes for free.
  • Saved over 50 homes in 2022.

Understanding the Demographic

The Red Cross would like more volunteers within certain area codes. There are certain area codes with a lot of disaster calls and a low number of volunteers. We collected data from
www.unitedstateszipcodes.org based on these zip codes and compared them to the demographic of DAT members. Here's what we learned:

Q&A with the DAT Coordinator

We got to ask Monroe County DAT Coordinator Carl Harder some questions about involvement in the DAT. Here are some key takeaways:
Based on our research and the answers from the Q&A, we determined our core objective:

Creating Our Proposal

We came up with 2 options that we thought would be an effective plan to convince a new audience to volunteer for Red Cross’s DAT and HFC programs:

Option 1

Option 2

We decided to choose option 1 because while exploring communities to partner with, we found several organizations in Rochester that have goals that match the qualities that DAT volunteers have and are trained for.
This gave us an idea as for how we could collaborate:
The DAT already has a program in place that trains participants in these skills, which is the New Volunteer Training Program.
In collaboration with these organizations, we will host a DAT training session for participants to gain experience practicing these skills. This gives participants the option to continue training with DAT to become a volunteer & they'll already have the training program partially fulfilled.
Next, we had to ask 2 questions:

1. Which programs should we partner with?

We decided upon 2 organizations in our targeted area codes that had programs focused on preparing members in the skills that the DAT can teach (specific names are classified).

2. How will we communicate the value of volunteering for the DAT & HFC?

In pitching the value of being a volunteer for the Red Cross, we decided to utilize the Golden Circle strategy developed by Simon Sinek. This presentation style emphasizes this program’s importance to a prospective volunteer or a current member of the Red Cross/Urban League/United Way leadership program.

Final Proposal + Conclusion

Final Proposal
+ Conclusion

This is our final deck that we presented to the American Red Cross Regional Recruitment Specialist of Western New York.

We were selected!

The American Red Cross chose our proposal to move forward with implementation! Our group will be working with the Red Cross team in Spring 2024 in order to implement our solution.

Takeaways: I believe we were successful because our research and understanding led us to the most straightforward solution. Because of the data we collected and the questions we asked, it was clear to see that there was a large demographic of POC in Rochester, specifically in the area codes that the Red Cross wanted to target. We debated on trying to target a different or multiple demographics, but we determined focusing on the largest demographic would help us hone in on our proposal strategy. I owe a lot of credit to my two teammates. I didn't know Michelle or Kennedy beforehand and we ended up being down a person compared to everyone else, but that goes to show the resilience of us as a team.

Thanks to Lorrie Frear, the EUREKA planning team, Natalie Robinson, the Momentum 3 team, Bernie Bowie & the Red Cross organization for this opportunity! I’m excited to help implement some positive change in this great organization.
